DISTRONIC PLUS with the new STEER CONTROL helps the driver to keep a preset distance to the vehicle travelling ahead or to maintain a selected desired speed. However, the system does not only measure the distance to the car in front, the new STEER CONTROL sub-function additionally uses the lane markings for orientation and helps the driver to stay in the lane.The necessary corrections are executed by the electric steering system, which provides feedback to the driver via the steering wheel and a steering wheel symbol in the instrument cluster for this purpose.

Active Blind Spot Assist uses radar and monitors the blind spot areas to the left, right and rear of the vehicle. If a vehicle is detected within the monitored range, a warning symbol is displayed in the driver's exterior mirror. Should the driver overlook the warning and start to change lanes, the ESP® system can intervene actively.

Active Lane Keeping Assist continuously registers the lane markings. Should the system identify that the vehicle is drifting over a line or markings in an uncontrolled manner, it can counter this with an active braking intervention The expanded system, which is used for the first time in the new generation of the E-Class, furthermore recognises additional dangers when crossing dotted lane markings and when passing as well as the oncoming traffic.

The forward-looking BAS PLUS Brake Assist has in the past already helped the driver in linear traffic in the event of impending rear-end collisions with vehicles travelling ahead or with stationary objects. The system is active at speeds of up to 250 km/h and provides the required brake force if the driver applies the brakes in an emergency situation. In the new E-Class the BAS PLUS function for the first time is expanded to include objects (Junction Assist) and pedestrians (pedestrian protection) crossing in front of the vehicle, which is of particular relevance in city traffic and at junctions. Crossing objects as well as stationary or slowly moving pedestrians in the area in front of the vehicle can be recognised by the system, which can then warn the driver and aid in an emergency brake application at speeds of up to 72 km/h.

The PRE-SAFE® brake can help prevent rear-end collisions. The system issues a warning to alert the driver if it detects the immediate risk of a rear-end collision. If the driver does not react, the system initiates autonomous partial braking 1.6 seconds before the calculated time of impact, decelerating the vehicle with around 40 percent of maximum braking power (4 m/s2). This provides another prompt for the driver to take action. Should the driver also fail to react to this haptic signal, the PRE-SAFE® brake will if necessary trigger an autonomous emergency stop. In the new generation of the E-Class the PRE-SAFE® brake is now also active when pedestrians are detected.

The expanded PRE-SAFE® PLUS cannot only recognise dangers ahead of the vehicle and initiate safety measures for the occupants, it can also react to potential dangers behind the vehicle. With PRE-SAFE® PLUS a radar sensor in the rear bumper detects objects with which a collision is imminent, and can initiate appropriate preventive measures such as locking the brakes. The system is rounded out with height-adjustable seat belt buckle extenders for the outer rear seat positions.They facilitate fastening the seat belts and ensure a safety-relevant pretensioning of the belts when the Pre-Safe® mechanisms are triggered in dangerous situations.

In the event of a collision, the Rear Seat Safety package can significantly reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear. The package includes sidebags as well as adaptive belt force limiters for the outer seat positions in the rear.

The KEYLESS-GO package provides even more convenience This electronic drive authorisation system enables the driver to get in the vehicle and start the engine without a vehicle key.

As soon as a driver selects a setting with the touch of a button, electric controls automatically set the seat, exterior mirrors and steering column back to the previously saved positions. Furthermore, if the PRE-SAFE® system is activated, the front passenger seat can be moved automatically into a more favourable crash position. If there is no collision, the seat is returned to its original position once the vehicle falls below critical thresholds.

In conjunction with the optional Active Multicontour Seats the PRE-SAFE® positioning function can spring into action: If the system detects a critical driving situation, the side bolsters of the seat cushion and the backrest are inflated to laterally secure driver and front passenger in place.

The Multicontour Seats take pressure off the spine and can be precisely adjusted to the ergonomic characteristics of the driver and the front passenger. To this end the pressure in the variable air chambers of the backrest side bolsters as well as of the backrest curvature in the lumbar area can be set. The control elements are located next to the seat cushion between the seat surface and the centre console.

The package also comprises the PRE-SAFE® positioning function that makes preventive protection measures for driver and front passenger possible. If PRE-SAFE® detects a critical situation, the side bolsters of the backrests are inflated, laterally securing driver and passenger in place. If no collision takes place, the Multicontour Seats are deflated again once certain critical thresholds are undercut.

The 360-degree camera system displays the vehicle's surroundings from a bird's-eye perspective on the screen of the COMAND Online multimedia system. Monitoring all four sides of the vehicle makes it easier to judge all manoeuvring situations.

The system comprises a short-range camera system with four cameras and a control unit, which together can provide a bird's-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings One camera is located in a central location in the radiator grille, one in each exterior mirror and one centred in the boot lid. The 'virtual viewpoint' created by the camera images covers an area of about three metres in front of the vehicle and behind. The image is displayed on the head unit screen.

When reversing or parking, additional guide lines, already familiar from the reversing camera function, are displayed to help orientation and the parking manoeuvre. The swept area when turning the wheel is shown along the sides of the vehicle. The camera image changes automatically when the gear is changed (forwards/reversing). The four camera views can also be selected individually through the central controls in the head unit.

Active Park Assist helps the driver when looking for a place to park and when parking. The system uses ultrasonic sensors to determine whether a parallel or perpendicular parking space is large enough.

Active Parking Assist makes a major contribution to safe and comfortable driving. It helps drivers find suitable parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and helps them to park and to leave a parking space by active steering and brake interventions. The integral PARKTRONIC warns of obstacles in front of the vehicle and behind.

The driver starts the parking manoeuvring process by stopping ahead of the indicated parking space, selecting reverse and confirming the operation in the instrument cluster. Active Parking Assist then parks in the selected parking space by means of steering motors (up to a speed of 10 km/h). The driver only operates the throttle and the brake pedal.

The automatic child seat recognition can recognise special transponders in the special child seat models from the Mercedes-Benz accessories range and automatically deactivates the front-passenger airbag. An indicator lamp lights up to confirm that the airbag has been deactivated. The belt tensioner and all other airbags on the front-passenger side – such as the sidebag, pelvisbag or windowbag – remain active in order to protect the child. The front-passenger airbag is reactivated automatically after the child seat has been removed.

The tyre pressure monitoring system boosts safety by alerting the driver to critical drops in tyre pressure. The wheel electronics system continuously transmits tyre pressures and temperature data to the vehicle’s control unit. If the system identifies a variance, it warns the driver through a signal in the instrument cluster.

The reversing camera offers convenience and added safety. Integrated into the boot lid, the camera transmits an image of the area behind the vehicle to the central COMAND Online multimedia system (optional extra). The camera image not only makes parking easier but also aids in manoeuvring on terrain with limited visibility.

New optics with digital image transfer and additional electronic zoom functions ensure an optimum image in all driving situations. When manoeuvring, the driver can select the "back-in" mode, in which dynamic guide lines indicate the respective path of the vehicle.

If the vehicle is fitted with a trailer coupling, a further mode is made available. In "Back-in" mode the driver is initially assisted in backing up to the drawbar properly aligned through the marking of the vehicle's centre axis. Once he is close to the trailer, "Zoom mode" enables him to align the vehicle with absolute precision. The driver is helped by a dynamic guide line which shows the path of the trailer coupling at the respective steering angle.

Lane Keeping Assist can detect a traffic lane based on the road markings and, if the car is about to leave its lane unintentionally, warn the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate gently. If the indicator is operated beforehand or the steering wheel is consciously turned, the system assumes that the lane change is intentional and does not issue a warning.

Blind Spot Assist uses two radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor the blind spot at speeds above 30 km/h and can warn the driver against dangerous lane changes if the system detects another road user in the critical area to the right or left of the vehicle.

The expanded system builds upon the previous Speed Limit Assist. Traffic signs are identified visually by a camera system behind the windscreen.

In addition to the traffic signs already recognised by the system previously, the function was now expanded to also include the recognition of 'Do not enter' and 'No passing' signs as well as of the signs lifting the restrictions. The system compares the detected traffic signs with the traffic signs stored in its memory and shows them on the display if a match is found. In addition to the plausibility check against the signs stored in the system, the system also uses data from the navigation system.

The integrated Bluetooth® interface allows wireless interaction with a compatible mobile phone. The functions of your phone can be accessed via the screen. Incoming text messages can also be displayed here. And if you want to make a call, you can select your contact safely and intuitively using the control unit. A charging function and improved reception quality via a connection to the exterior aerial also add to the features offered by this range of equipment.

The Media Interface with consumer cable kit is a universal interface in the glove compartment used to connect mobile audio/video devices while you’re on the road. You can comfortably access a USB stick, for example, or your iPod® using the vehicle’s control and display units.

The TV receiver enables television viewing during driving breaks: The receiver unit processes the digital signals in DVB-T standard and is controlled using the COMAND Online multimedia system, whose display is positioned in the driver’s central field of vision and also shows the image.

Sound output is via the vehicle's speaker system. The receiving aerial is integrated in the rear window. At speeds above approx. 6 km/h, the image is switched off for safety reasons and reappears when the speed falls below this limit.

When not in use, the trailer coupling is behind the bumper cover. If needed, the trailer coupling can be folded down below the bumper using a lever integrated into the load compartment and manually arrested in its end position. An LED next to the release lever goes out once the trailer tow hitch is locked in the correct position.

The trailer tow hitch is folded back via the release lever in the luggage compartment, too. Again, the LED goes out once the trailer tow hitch is locked in place behind the bumper. In conjunction with the optional COMAND Online multimedia system and the optional reversing camera, a special camera resolution and an additional auxiliary line are available which enable the driver to hitch up a trailer without any outside help.

KEYLESS GO is an electronic access and drive authorisation system, which enables the driver to unlock the vehicle and start the engine without having to actually hold the key.

For this purpose the access and drive authorisation functions are stored in the electronic key. The system can also be used to lock the vehicle from the outside and has a convenience opening/closing function. The engine can be started and switched off using the start/stop button in the ignition lock.

If the key is in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and the user grips one of the door handles, the vehicle electronics system uses the relevant induction aerials (in the doors, fuel filler flap, bumper) to communicate with the key. If the authorisation code matches, the vehicle is unlocked.

The optionally available HANDS-FREE ACCESS function unlocks and opens the boot lid if the key is in the vicinity of the vehicle and a foot is held under the bumper. The foot is registered by a sensor. The sensor then gives the signal to open the boot lid. This makes it possible to load or unload the vehicle without touching the vehicle or the key.

The panoramic sliding sunroof consists of a fixed panoramic glass roof and an electrically operated glass sunroof that slides over the exterior of the roof. The large window panes with optimised net wind deflector provide the best possible light/visibility and a more generous sense of space from all the seats.

The sliding glass sunroof increases draught-free air circulation in the interior and counteracts the tendency of the windows to mist up in unfavourable weather conditions. With the wind deflector, driving at a high speed with an open roof causes neither excessive noise nor draughts. Thanks to a newly developed function, the automatic opening and closing can take it to the position which was selected last.

The sliding sunroof is operated by the multifunction switch in the overhead control panel. When the multifunction switch in the overhead control panel is moved beyond a pressure point in the appropriate direction and released, the sliding sunroof automatically moves to the respective final position (e.g. tilting, opening, closing).

When locking the vehicle with the remote control or when using KEYLESS GO with the door lock elements, the sliding sunroof can be closed by pressing and holding the locking button. If the button is released, the closing procedure stops. The "summer opening" function can be activated via the electronic key, which also activates the seat ventilation feature of the climatised seat (if this feature is present) on the driver's side.

In conjunction with the rain sensor the continuously variable control of the wiper speed is extended to include the function "automatic closing of the sliding sunroof in the rain". With the onset of rain or in extreme temperatures, the sliding sunroof is automatically moved to the tilt position.

The ambient lighting bathes the interior of the car in pleasant, indirect light.Three shades (neutral, solar, polar) can be selected individually on the multifunction steering wheel.

It is activated and deactivated with the outside lighting. When the doors are opened it is also switched on in order to provide a "welcome home" effect. The ambient lighting function is infinitely dimmable and can be switched off.

The rear seats with integral child seats provide appropriate protection for children. The integrated child seats are incorporated into the seat cushions at the outer rear seat positions. A hinge mechanism allows the seats to be pivoted upwards and locked into place.

Children aged roughly four to twelve years may be secured with the standard three-point seat belts, while children aged two to four years must be additionally secured with a special padded play table. This play table, and therefore the child, is also secured by means of the standard seat belt.

The garage door opener integrated in the rear-view mirror makes it possible to operate the garage door and other receiver units directly from the car without requiring a separate remote control. It is programmed using the hand unit of an existing garage door opener system. After this the garage door opening system can be controlled via the control panel.

The folding bench seat in the luggage compartment expands the Estate by two additional seats for persons up to 140 cm in height and/or up to 50 kg in weight.

The backrest is secured to the front load compartment floor cover, while the seat cushion is attached to the rear cover. The folding bench seat can be easily folded down via a folding mechanism. When not in use, the backrest and seat cushion can be lowered under the load compartment floor. Specification includes two 3-point seat belts, one extending, folding head restraint per seat and a double cup holder.

The THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system allows the driver and front passenger to adapt the climate in their respective seats to suit their individual requirements – independently of each other. The system keeps the temperature at the desired level automatically, even in strong sunlight.

To this end, sensors register the temperature inside and outside the vehicle, controlling the heating, cooling and fan for each temperature zone individually as required.

The load compartment management system EASY-PACK kit consists of the EASY-PACK load rails and the EASY-PACK rear sill protector. These features ensure that the load can be safely secured and increase the protection against damages from loading and unloading.

A telescopic rod and load compartment rails allow dividing the load compartment into variable sections. And roller lashing straps also make it possible to secure objects to the sides.

In this way the EASY-PACK kit load compartment management system provides order in the load compartment. When loading and unloading the boot, the EASY-PACK rear sill protector included in this package can be placed over the bumper. As a result the loading area is protected to a large extent from scratches and damage.

The multifunction steering wheel features a steering wheel heating system that heats it to 35 ºC, gearshift paddles to manually operate the transmission's gears and 12 function buttons for operating the display menus in the instrument cluster, and for controlling the radio volume.

The steering wheel heating is switched on with a rotary switch behind the multifunction steering wheel. A heat mat inside the multifunction steering wheel heats up the steering wheel rim to a temperature of 37 ºC, and then goes into control mode. The temperature then oscillates between 34 ºC and 38 ºC. If the steering wheel heating is no longer needed, it must be switched off manually.

The electric seat heating allows the rear seats to be heated individually to the desired temperature at one of several settings.The rocker switch or push-button control for each seat can be set to normal or rapid heating.

In the rapid heating setting, the system automatically changes to "normal" mode after approx. 5 minutes. The seat heating is automatically switched off completely after around 30 minutes. It can be also be switched off earlier than this manually. Seat heating is also switched off automatically if the battery charge is too low.

The climatised seats improve ride comfort on longer trips and reduce perspiration thanks to a pleasant air flow and selectable seat heating. Fans integrated in the seat upholstery uniformly distribute a flow of air in three intensity levels under the leather backrest and cushion covers.

The air flows through the fine perforation and quickly cools down the surface of the seats to a pleasant temperature – even if the vehicle has been heated by an intense amount of sunlight for a longer period of time. On cold days you can turn on the three-level adjustable seat heating, which guarantees together with the air flow that wet clothes dry faster.

The ski bag holds up to 4 pairs of skis and can be accessed from the luggage compartment. In this way the skis are protected from soiling during the journey, and thanks to the absence of a roof carrier system the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile is not impaired, which means there is no increase in fuel consumption.

The ski bag allows unproblematic loading and unloading of sports equipment, and affects neither the seat position of the front seats nor that of the outer rear seats. With the help of the retaining strap or retaining bracket the ski bag is secured in the footwell.

The auxiliary heater provides pleasant temperatures and clear windows even before the journey begins – and on frosty days. The heater has an output of five kilowatts and functions independently of the engine. It can be activated with a switch in the vehicle, using remote control from a distance of up to 300 metres or via a timer function.
