BlueEFFICIENCY from Mercedes-Benz stands for pioneering efficiency technologies as well as innovative packages of measures based on optimising fuel consumption and emission levels.

BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that help to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. The new E-Class Estate combines the most efficient engines with sophisticated aerodynamics and energy management measures to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

ECO display[1] To allow the driver to check how efficiently he is driving and to make adjustments where required, the ECO display shows an evaluation of driving style in the speedometer field of the instrument cluster.
ECO start/stop function The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill (for example when in a traffic jam or at traffic lights).
Intelligent energy management Significant savings can also be generated by a series of small contributions. With the aim of reducing fuel consumption for the E-Class Estate, Mercedes-Benz engineers examined the energy usage of all major assemblies and developed ways of getting them to work more economically. Overview of efficient energy management measures: On-demand control: The new electromechanical Direct-Steer offers significant fuel-saving potential due to the system-controlled energy demand. Efficient alternator management: kinetic energy is used to recharge the battery during braking and coasting. More efficient fuel management: the pumping pressure of the fuel pump is based on the precise amount of fuel needed at the time. On-demand air conditioning: if not required, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine’s belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the E-Class

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines combine irresistible performance characteristics with low consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise levels optimised – while reduced compression makes for lower emission levels.

Direct injection, increased compression ratios and turbocharging (turbocharging for some of the V6 engines and for the V8 engines) in the new petrol engines deliver outstanding torque, performance and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology made it possible to reduce emissions and fuel consumption significantly compared with the previous models.

The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is a milestone with regard to fuel efficiency, sustainability and comfort.It combines a 4-cylinder diesel engine with an electric motor and consequently makes the E-Class Estate one of the most efficient models in its vehicle segment.

BlueDIRECT engine technology The latest BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engine generation includes measures such as downsizing, direct petrol injection and turbochargers (8-cylinder models) for fast throttle response. Innovative BlueDIRECT engine technology made it possible to reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 24 per cent compared with the predecessor models.
BlueTEC catalytic converter technology BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. This makes it possible to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 per cent. This world's cleanest diesel technology to date already complies with the requirements of the future Euro 6 emissions standards.

Environmental certificate

Mercedes-Benz is the only automotive brand in the world to have received an ISO-standard Environmental Certificate. For this certification, the vehicle models have to meet strict requirements and undergo stringent controls in their development, production and recycling.
