The BlueEFFICIENCY models of the S-Class

Two BlueEFFICIENCY models available for the S-Class, equipped with environmentally friendly technologies and extensive special measures.

Efficiency technologies in the S-Class

The environmentally compatible HYBRID drive technology combines the power of an efficient petrol engine with the strengths of an electric motor. A powerful and weight-reduced lithium-ion battery supplies the high-torque electric motor. In combustion mode, the electric motor operates as a generator and feeds energy back into the system. At the same time, brake energy recharges the lithium-ion battery using the regenerative braking system when the brakes are applied. The boost function allows the power of both engines to be used for a brief period when accelerating.

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines display compelling performance characteristics coupled with low consumption levels. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise levels optimised, while reduced compression makes for lower emission levels.

Packages of measures in the S-Class

Depending on the engine installed, the BlueEFFICIENCY models are equipped with a series of different measures. These are for instance:

  • ECO start/stop function
  • efficient energy management, e.g. electrohydraulic power steering
  • transmission with optimised ratio and standstill decoupling
  • Rolling-resistance-optimised tyres
  • improved aerodynamics, e.g. sealed headlamp joints and new design exterior mirror housing
